Questions
- What is sound? sound is a form of energy
- How is sound produced? for sound to be produced it must be set up by a source
- What do sound vibrations travel through? vibrations travel through a solid liquid or gas
- Through which substance does sound travel fastest?Concorde travels faster
- Why is this? cause things that travel faster is called super sonic that is Concorde
- Why do you think sound cannot travel through a vacuum?
- What is pitch? pitch is when something sounds high or low
- How would you create a high pitch on:
- A guitar? A shorter thinner tighter string will produce a higher pitch
- A recorder? A short column makes a higher pitch
- A drum?
- What does the volume of sound depend on? sound depends on the amount of energy the vibrations contain and rate at which this energy is transmitted
- How would you play a drum quietly? if you hit the drums hard it would make a loud sound if you hit it softly it will make a quiet sound
- How much energy do you think the vibrations would have if you did this? if you did this you would take up a lot of energy from vibrations
- If the vibrations had lots of energy, what would the volume be like? it would be a high pitch

Changing Sounds
Sound is a type of energy. Sound is produced by vibrations.
Vibrations are made must by __hitting___ a drum, __blowing___ a recorder, _plucking____ a string.
_sound ___ can travel through a solid _ liquid__ or gas and reach our ears where it can be heard. If the vibrations have a lot of energy then they are __long___. If they have little energy then the sound is __quiet____. Sometimes vibrations can be __felt_____ on the skin.
Sound travels faster in a solid than in _water__. It travels faster in water than it does in _air____.
Dolphins communicate with each other under the _sea__.
Pitch is the highness or lowness of a sound. A high__ pitch is caused by short vibrations and a low pitch is caused by __long_ vibrations.
The pitch of a note produced by a guitar depends on the length, thickness and tension of the string. A shorter, thinner, tighter string produces a high pitch and a longer, thicker, looser string produces a low pitch. On a guitar the strings can be shortened by putting a __finger_ on the fret board.
When you _blow_____ into a wind instrument the air vibrates. The pitch depends on the length of the column. A long column makes a _low ___ pitch and a _short___ column makes a high pitch.
The loudness (volume) of the sound depends on how hard a string is plucked. The sound will be louder the harder it is plucked.
